Synopsis - Woman from the East is the story of Ganga (Pakkhi Hegde), a poor girl who lives in Bihar with her father and stepmother. She is sold to Paala Singh (Sukhbir Singh), a farmer from Punjab; who in want of an heir buys Ganga. Ganga now lives the life of a Purbyaani (Woman from the East) in Punjab, displaced and alienated from her roots. The film is a dedication to all such women around the world who lose the sense of belongingness in their own motherlands.
Pakkhi Hegde - the Telugu actor plays the role of the protagonist Ganga. Sukhbir Singh who has done a number of Punjabi films including Asan Nu Maan Watna Da, essays the role of Paala Singh in this film. Sukhbir Razia, who is also the Assistant director of Woman from the East, essays the role of Veero. It is worth mentioning that Sukhbir Razia has not only made her presence felt in the Punjabi Cinema with a number of Punjabi Films like Ik Kudi Punjab Di, Akhian Udeekdian, Jawani zindabaad, Syasat, Mitti, Saada Chirian da chamba to name a few, but she is all set to make her Bollywood debut with Dharmendra Deol, Sunny & Bobby Deol starrer Yamla Pagla Deewana. The Director of the film Jeet Matharru himself plays an important role in Woman from the East.
