Brahmos combines the names of two rivers: the Brahmaputra and the Mosocow. It symbolises the close partnership that exists between India and Russia.

Here's why the Brahmos is considered the world's finest. It can fly at speeds of up to Mach 2.8-3.0, three times the speed of sound. The cruise missile, has a range of about 290 km and can carry upto 300 kg warhead.It can destroy ships and targets on land. It's a supersonic cruise missile rgar can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land. The missile is marginally over eight meters in length, 670 mm in diameter and weighs 3,000 kg. It combines the propulsion system and self-homing device of Russian's "Yakhont" or "Onyx" system with on-board computer equipment developed by Indian defence scientists.It is about three-and-a-half times faster than the U.S.A's subsonic Harpoon cruise missile.


The Brahmos will be deployed on the Sukhoi 30 MKI, the mainstay of the Indian Air Force. The Sukhoi's ability to fly thousands of kilometres after being re-fuelled in-air means that the Brahmos can be used to strike targets across large parts of South Asia.


"It is the fastest and most precise cruise-missile in the world," affirms Pravin Pathak, Additional GM BrahMos Aerospace.


Today, with Russian assistance, and missiles like the Brahmos, the Indian Navy's frontline ships are fitted with the fastest and possibly most lethal anti-ship weapons ever developed.

NEW DELHI: The Defence Ministry may redraw India's defence strategy in the southeast, giving extra importance to relations with Indonesia. Some active-duty and retired Indian military officials have suggested more diplomacy with Jakarta and joint exercises with Indonesian troops, ministry sources here said.
......... A senior ministry official said India and Indonesia have been strengthening their defense ties for some time, and the two countries have even explored the possibility of joint production of weapons and military equipment.
The two countries have also discussed joint patrols by Indian and Indonesian warships in the Strait of Malacca, the region's favored sea route for large ships, including oil tankers from the Arabian Gulf
......... An Indonesian diplomat said that Jakarta is interested in buying the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, jointly developed by India and Russia.Indonesia also is interested in the co-production with India of radars, electronic equipment and artillery weapons, the diplomat said.
