Remote Pamir Mountain District of Tajikistan

Daniel Noll (photographer), on a journey around the world, took these pictures in the remote Pamir mountain district of Tajikistan in Central Asia.

"The snow-capped peaks of the Hindu Kush provide a dramatic backdrop for donkeys carrying firewood to the Wakhan Valley village of Langar."

"Pamiri people are well-known for their hospitality. Even though they have very little, they often invited us in for tea, bread, conversation and, occasionally, fresh milk."

"Women in the Wakhan Valley village of Langar carry water regularly from a mountain stream to supply their homes with fresh water. Running water is very difficult to come by."

"Most Pamiri families subsist by raising a few animals and growing what they can. Many fathers work in Russia, leaving their families to survive on money they send home."

"A recycled metal container serves as a makeshift café in Murghab's central market area. Life in the high desert is difficult. Nothing grows, not even potatoes."

"A vendor at the market in Khorog shares the story of the death of a relative the night before. The vendor was a nurse during the Soviet era. She said health care was now scarce."

"This car carried eight women, a boy and a driver across Tajikistan's highest navigable pass, Ak-Baital (4,655m) [15,272ft]. Every few kilometres, their tyres went flat."
